FAQ

Do I have to have really strong skills and be an elite beach or indoor player to join AVP Academy NYC Metro?

No! We have all levels of players that train with us. Whether you are looking to play competitively or just enhance your overall skill level and volleyball fitness, we cater to all skill levels.

Do I have to have prior volleyball experience before joining AVP Academy NYC Metro?

Yes, we prefer that you have some basic volleyball knowledge and skills before joining. Our training will help you develop and enhance your skills, but we will not be “starting from scratch”. As stated above, you don’t have to be an elite player, but we do ask that you join with knowledge of the basics.

When are practices?

The 2019 Season begins Saturdays at the beginning of June, and runs through mid - August. Weekday practices start towards the end of June, as most players finish with their school year. Practices are usually between 9am and 12pm, and are held at Pier 6 in Brooklyn, easily accessible via most subway lines, by car, and quick trips across the Brooklyn Bridge. Practice and tournament schedules will be posted during the Spring.

What do I need to bring to practices?

We supply all of the equipment, so you just need to come dressed to play. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and “sandsocks”, in case the sand is very hot (a regular pair of socks will do, but sandsocks are designed to play volleyball in the sand)……And bring a water bottle!

What if I miss some practices due to other obligations or indoor camps?

Our training program is unlike any other that you have experienced. If you miss live practice sessions in the sand, you won’t miss the instruction, as you will have access to the online content, which includes skills videos that directly correlate to the live practice sessions. AVP Academy believes that education and physical training go hand in hand. This way, if you are unable to attend a practice, you can still “do your homework”. Coaches will inform players prior to live practices what videos to “preview”, as well as notify players missing any practices as to what is being covered that day. This is an invaluable tool that allows players to have access to learning, even when they are away from the court.

Does membership include entry fees for tournaments?

No, as we cater to all levels of players, not all players will be attending tournaments. Tournament play is up to you. You will find a partner during our practices who might want to play tournaments with you, and we will post a list of local and regional tournaments as schedules are solidified.

Do coaches attend tournaments?

Yes, coaches will attend some of the tournaments, especially if we have multiple teams playing, or if it is a regional or national level tournament. Coaching at tournaments is different for beach volleyball than for indoor volleyball. For beach, coaches are not allowed to talk to players during a match, except during timeouts.

Do I need to join the AVP to be a member of AVP Academy NYC Metro?

Yes, all players need to register separately with the AVP through their website. However, we do offer the first 25 players to register a FREE AVP MEMBERSHIP.

How do I access the AVP Academy online platform?

After you register for our club, we email you login information so you can get online asap.
